Photoset Sunday #5 – Pleine Mer (Men at Sea) by Jean Gaumy

This series is comprised of photographs taken over a course of 14 years (1984-1998) by French photographer Jean Gaumy. The vastness of the sea paired with the confined spaces of the ship bring some wonderful juxtaposition into this series. There’s a power in every shot of that deep, dark ocean that is extremely compelling, and the quieter scenes of the men resting help to highlight that power.

Pleine Mer was published in 2001 by Abrams books.

Photoset Sunday #4 – “Encaustic” by Dawn Huemann

Encaustic Photography is a technique where wax and pigment are used on an image, which can be used to create a variety of effects. In this series by Dawn Huemann, the encaustic technique is used to give her photos a withered, vintage look while still maintaining vivid colors and warm tones. The vignetting around the edges also serves to give the photos a soft glowing quality, as though the images were from a warm summer memory.

Photoset Sunday #3 – 4/12/15

Pedro Meyer – Nicaragua 1978-1979

In this set, Pedro Meyer documents the Nicaraguan Revolution of 1978-1979. In this period of civil war, intense opposition to the Somoza dictatorship led the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSNL) to lead a loose army of volunteers against the highly trained Nicaraguan National Guard. In 1979 President Somoza resigned and the FSNL was able to move into the capital city of Managua and gain control of the government.

Meyer followed the FSNL closely, documenting their training, battles, and victory at the capital.

Photoset Sunday #1 – 3/29/15

Every Sunday, instead of just a single photo of the day, I’m going to try and give you all an entire set of photos.

Alec Soth – Niagara

In this set, Soth explores not only the beauty and power of the Falls, but the city and people around it. From worn down hotels to young couples in love, the diverse images provide a poignant look into the hearts of this small part of America and the people who inhabit it.
